Abstract
In this paper the development and application of an innovative armour unit called Xbloc® are presented. The paper includes the main features of the new concrete interlocking armour block, a technical and economical comparison of various armouring concepts and a presentation of the first Xbloc® breakwater projects.
Introduction
The Xbloc® can be described as an X-shaped body with 2 cubes attached in the centre. It has been designed: (a) for exposed sites and for application in harsh environmental conditions (random placement); (b) for single layer placement (for economical and safety reasons); (c) with a simple shape (to facilitate fabrication); (d) with balanced structural and hydraulic stability; and finally, (f) for fast and easy placement as blocks will easily find a stable position on the slope.

The main features of the new armour unit are presented in this paper and compared with other single layer armour units.
