Eco Xblocs at IJmuiden provide a good habitat for marine life
6 december 2011
This year the final monitoring report on the “Rich Dike” project at IJmuiden has been published. In 2008 ten Eco Xblocs have been placed at IJmuiden, on the southern breakwater of the port entrance to Amsterdam.
These Eco Xblocs have a rough surface to enhance marine growth. In the past 3 years the Eco Xblocs have been monitored and the marine life on the Eco Xblocs has been studied and quantified.
One of the main conclusions of the final monitoring report is that the Xblocs provide a more varied habitat than conventional armour units (cubes). This is due to the larger variation in the orientation of the various surfaces of the Xblocs.
The Rich Dike project at IJmuiden has been initiated by Deltares and Rijkswaterstaat, the monitoring has been done by Ecoconsult.
