Ecological Tests IJmuiden, The Netherlands
Dutch institutes Deltares, and the Dutch Ministry of Public Works are joined together in a project called "The Rich Dike" as part of the Water Innovation Programme WINN. This project has been initiated to improve the ecological value of hard shore protections. Along various places on the Dutch coast tests are being executed.
Levende Waterbouw (text for Dutch readers)
Tijdens het symposium Levende Waterbouw bij Rijkswaterstaat in Utrecht (georganiseerd door Deltares) is het idee gelanceerd om havendammen (golfbrekers) meer milieu en publieksvriendelijk te maken. Dit zou kunnen door ze uit te voeren met een intergetijdegebied met getijdepoelen die bij laagwater vol blijven staan. Dit intergetijdegebied kan met trappen toegangkelijk gemaakt worden. Families kunnen dan hier het rijke zeeleven bewonderen. Voor vissers bied dit vlakke intergetijdegebied goede mogelijkheden om te vissen. Onder het intergetijdegebied bevindt zich een talud van Eco Xblocs. Deze kunnen ook poreus worden uitgevoerd om een nog betere vestigingsplaats voor zeeleven te vormen. At the southern breakwater of IJmuiden test areas are allocated for several tests. New breakwater elements have been placed on the breakwater, and different types of surfaces have been applied on the existing cubes and on the new Eco Xblocs (see pictures). As part of the test these elements will monitored during three years. The results of the tests will be used in the decision making process of the rehabilitation of the IJmuiden breakwaters. The ecological value of the existing breakwater should be preserved or even be improved.
Eco Xbloc
2 Xbase® units and 8 Xbloc® units are placed on southern breakwater. They are located on the transition section between cubes and rock armour. On the Eco Xbloc several rough surfaces have been created and different vegetation growth may be expected. The surfaces have been roughened using NOEplast inside the mould. Monitoring results are presented on this website.
