25 - 27 April 2023, ICE Breakwaters 2023

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Coasts, Marine Structures and Breakwaters Conference (25 - 27 April) 2023 will cover the latest developments across maritime engineering topics from coasts to port and waterfronts to breakwaters while focusing on the full spectrum of research and study, design, construction and operations.

For two case studies for coastal protection in the UK we have made a comparison between XblocPlus and Rock Armour on sustainability, costs and climate resilience. The conclusion for the case studies presented, XblocPlus has a lower carbon footprint, lower construction costs and will not require maintenance during the structure lifetime.

The reduction in carbon footprint and costs are due to the reduced material quantities. For example 154 ton of rock armour is replaced by 26 ton of concrete armour. The transport of large quantities of rock from Norway to the UK has a significant contribution to the large carbon footprint (and costs) of armour rock.
